Foodlums Minutes 10/24/08

Sustainability Week
Went well
The week provides us with a framework for Earth Week and next fall's Sustainability Week (maybe a week or two earlier when it's warmer)

Dining Contract Meetings
no one went this week but some people went the week before and put in their two cents.

Hot Dog Sale
There may or may not still be hotdogs to buy from Hickory. Give him an e-mail if you're interested. tatehr@uwec.edu

Pesto
We still have some we can make, but there are several good-sized baggies of pesto in Ane's freezer now. At the meeting people thought $3.50- 4 per bag (they're reasonable sized bags)

Trayless Petition
We got some signatures during sustainability week, but we still need a lot more.
I would send on a copy of the petition so everyone can get signatures, but I can't find one. There is one partially filled signature sheet in the foodlums locker in one of the files.

“Menu for the Future”
Happening at the EC Public Library—Nov. 4, 11, 18 and Dec. 2
Open to the public but space is limited so you should sign up asap. Just go to the L.E. Phillips Library website and find it there.

Human Rights Awareness Conference
Put on by student senate and last year foodlums put on a presentation
Week of Nov. 10th and they are looking for presenters from 10-4 mon. - thur.
Someone know something that they would be interested in presenting about dealing with food? or even if you just want to research something enough to be able to present on it.
Corey will contact with Equal Exchange from the cities to see if she would like to talk about fair trade.

Accessing Local Markets and Buyers workshop
In Viroqua Nov. 14th-- touches on the business and marketing aspect of local food.
Zac went last year and will be going again this year, so contact him with questions or lewd comments. barneszj@uwec.edu

Sustainable Agriculture conference in Madison
Oct 31-Nov.1 Dr. Jamelski and Dr. Hupy will be on the presenting side of the conference as well as Dylan and Corey
Ane, Emilie, Danielle, and Briana will be attending as well.

Progressive dinner happened on Friday

Garden
garlic was planted on Friday-- one patch on the tomato side and one patch on the shady side as an experiment to analyze the effect of our sun situation on garlic growth
Other ideas for winter planting-- maybe kohlrabi?
Also, who has knowledge on how to winterize strawberries, raspberries?

Shed
Shed plans are on hold and may be terminated because it turns out the okay we previously got wasn't the official okay and now the plan needs to be approved through the state.

Composting on campus
Results on lower campus were pretty awesome-- 1 ton of food waste for the week. Emilie says to keep in mind that some rain got on it so it's hard to tell how accurate that measurement is.
Collection increased as the week went on, so it would just require people catching on.
Upper campus trial coming soon.

Foodlums Minutes October 17th 2008

Hello all you dedicated and soon-to-be-dedicated foodlums!

Jasmine is swamped with things to do this semester and is steping down from the vice president position. A new vice president was sworn in at the meeting- Dave-o the pirate, David Hon.

Campus Sustainability Days
-Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week drop by for tabling 11-2 either in davies or on the campus mall.
-check out the attached schedule to see what other super fun stuff is going on this week. You could easily fill a day and night with the programs that are planned. note that the canoe river clean up that is sponsored by the hobnailers(which sounds especially exciting) has limited space.
- Trayless edifisc building (to show the volume of food wasted in a cafeteria each day) still needs to happen but has been postponed due to lack of needed statistics. Be on the lookout for a desperate cry-for-help email in the next day or two.

Dining Contract meetings
-There are still meetings this week for us to voice our interest in local food and sustainibly produced food at the meetings concerning the new dining contract.
Monday 5-6:30 alumni room
Tuesday 11:30-1 presidents room

Pesto Making happened Sat. night. we made a good amount, so if anyone's interested in purchasing a price will be decided upon at the next meeting, so stay posted.

PROGRESSIVE DINNER will be happening Friday (october 24)
-If you plan on coming, RSVP to Briana (odegarbn@uwec.edu) by wednesday so we can get an approximate count of people.
-the dinner will start with appetizers at Corey's (223 apt. C Hudson St.) and continue on to Ane's and Dylan's for main course and dessert.
-bring $5 to reimberse the hosts for food costs.

Garden
There are a butt-load of green tomatoes in the garden on the concrete mushroom. It'd be great if people could come get them and keep them in a paper bag with a ripe tomato or two to ripen them so we can preserve them either by simply freezing or canning or some technique that can later be decided upon.

Just Local Foods is in the process of moving to the former Johnny's Market site.
They'll need help monday, so if anyone can help out, stop by the store or e-mail zac (barneszj@uwec.edu)

Can't wait to see everyone tabling and going to events during campus sustainability days!!!!! !!!! !!

4-25-08

Foodlums Minutes 4-25-08

At Friday's meeting, we mostly just talked about plans for the Earth Day celebration, which was cancelled. I'll convey the plans below, just so we can remember how devoted we all were.

Earth Day
Drinks
- 6 kegs of Sprecher's rootbeer-- zac will get them in the morning
- Biodegradable cups not yet recieved in mail.... buying paper ones in case the biodegradable ones aren't in ben's mail box by the time we need them.
- water and ice recepticals need to be cleaned. we have 5 water barrels, 2 coolers for ice, and 2 tubs for ice and kegs.  to clean dilute 1T bleach to 1 gallon of water and slosh it around until all surfaces have been disinfected. then rinse the recepticals out with water-- a few times.
-pricing for drinks is as follows: water cup - $.50
                                             rootbeer (includes cup) - $1.00
                                             rootbeer re-fill- $.50
                                             water- FREE

Sat. morning schedule:
Group #1 meeting in garden at 9am to load dane's truck w/ compost, potting soil, and wagon.
Group #2 meeting in chancellor's lobby at 9am to disinfect and load ice into water barrels and coolers.

in retrospect:

Wendy was on TV with Judy Clark to promote the Earth Day festivities at 5 on friday :)

King Corn (the last progressive film fest film we were responsible for) was shown on friday night at 8. popcorn was served and corey and zac sacrificed themselves in order to pop popcorn during the film.

everything was loaded and ready to go. unfortunatly the earthday celebration was called off at the last minute due to cold and wind and snow, that, everyone decided they didn't love the earth enough to brave.

a foolums earth day potluck occured at davin's at 6 on saturday night with tasty food and fun.

4-18-08

Foodlums Minutes 4-18-08

Progressive Film Festival is this week in Hibbard 100.
We are hosting:
-Black Gold-- w/ free equal exchange coffee (mon. night at 8)
-Price of Sugar-- w/ honey from our honey bears (thur. night at 8)
-King Corn-- w/ free popcorn (fri. night at 8)

Speaking of honey, Zac is hosting baking lessons-- to bake french boule with honey!
-Wed. April 23rd at 10pm at zac's house. 1316 Jefferson Ct

Earth Day celebration at Pheonix park is next weekend!
-We will be selling composted cow manure, kitchen compost collecters, cookbooks, foodlums t-shirts, biodegradable cups for water (that we will have), and some other drinks that are not yet finalized.

Garden Party on April 20th
- Sunday (20th) people will begin w/ bagging compost at 10am and continue w/ starting seeds and setting up the cold frames at 12.
- People who come at 10 for bagging will find the bags for the compost under the tarp that's covering the other bags of compost
- Corey and Zac are taking care of the straw bales for the cold frames

Chair-person Wiley report
-Wed. the 23rd we should all organize on campus mall to hand out seeds. Just stop in and there will be seeds

Zac stuff
-Anyone interested in having a share of a plot in the Demler park community garden this summer should talk to Zac

-making the week an annual event?

happy earth day on tuesday!

Friday, April 11, 2008

4-11-08

Foodlums Minutes 4-11-08

Compost is coming in on Mon. morning! Bagging is being organized by me (Briana).

Earth Day
-rootbeer (1/2 barrel), juice, water (radio flier wagon and the shopping cart as tranportation), and jolly good (possibly in cans).
-plans to plant the council oak have gone... shady. the tree ceremony on the wed. after earth day may turn into just planting a tree for earth day instead of the official council oak.

Progressive Film Fest.
-Black Gold Mon. April 21 8pm Hibbard 100
-The Price of Sugar Thur. April 24 8pm Hibbard 100
-King Corn Fri. April 25 8pm Hibbard 100
-we should get some fliers circulating.... Kerri?

Garden Stuff
-the garden supply drive is still in the starting-up phase
-grow light option. we have 2 that have come out of the woodwork
-seductively more environmentally friendly alternative to grow lights-- making a cold frame/ hot box/ hot house with straw bales for walls for insulation and a sheet of clear plastic on top so we could just start a lot of the seeds in the garden
-contact Jarel if you'd be game for starting some seeds in your windows at home. just think of all the fun you can have with your sprouting seeds singing to them, reading them books, telling them about your day. he will assign you a seed. Ane suggests Seed Folks for story time with your seeds.
-collect your egg shells (pereferably broken into perfect halves) and egg cartons so we can use them to start seeds in and can just stick them in the ground with the eggshells and all. Dr. Hupy points out that this way, the eggshells will conveniently help to bring the pH of the soil closer to 7! BINGO
-another plan for seed-starting containers is teh coir-based pot which is made of coconut hair (more sustainable than the peat-based pot). Jane will buy a butt load of them using the weathered $5 bill that was found in the garden supply pile a few weeks ago.
-set aside Sun. April 20th... for a GARDEN HOLIDAY. we will be doing work in the garden and most importantly, building hot boxes/ hot houses/ cold frames (whatever you like to call them)

It's time for a much-needed foodlums Hoobob. the hoobob will occur on the weekend of the earthday celebration on saturday evening. location has yet to be determined.

Fry bread sale for NASA (native american student association) on thur. 11-2 in front of the council fire room. delicious!

4-4-08

Foodlums Minutes 4-4-08

AWESOME LOCAL FOODS WEEK!

We started out the meeting with reflections on our money situation:
- the hot dog sale raised $367.30 - $115 that bought the hot dogs and buns.
- we still owe Dane $110 from the last sale and Zac $120 from various food that he bought.
- the econ. department is going to give us $50 (WHOA! nice!)
- we have $200 pending from student senate
- compost will cost $425 (but we'll get it back plus more after we sell it)
- we want to have at least $120 so that we can have hot dog sales in the future
- a certain amount of money will be necessary for buying drinks that we will be selling at earth day
- we still need to buy an animal from Heifer International (probably around half of what we earned at the hot dog sale after expenses-- about $126.)
- garden supplies need replenishing, which might cost us around $80
- materials to start cold frames... around $100
- there are $540 in our account right now (excluding any money mentioned above)
-- It is suggested that we wait until we have paid for the compost, raised some money from compost sales, and gotten on our feet again (a few more weeks) until we buy the animal or animals for Heifer International.

Jen suggested starting a garden supply drive for community gardens in the area that we could benefit from as well, so she's the head of that committee. Hopefully we'll get a lot of donations from the community and then we won't have to spend as much on garden supplies.

Garden stuff.
- we need lights for starting seeds, old yogurt cartons, cold frame material,

Earth Day
- Judy Clark from TV 13 wants to do an interview April 25 @5. Ane and Wendy are on it.
- our next plan is to sell refreshments at the foodlums table. The decision was made to have a water crew that will refill big water dispensers and to have kegs of different sodas that come from in-state (point rootbeer, jolly good sodas..) Ben is in charge of the refreshment committee.

Farmers market
-last indoor farmers market is this coming saturday at Trinity church -- the one on Clairmont with the ski jump roof
-outdoor farmers market starts first saturday in may. We're gonna be there!

Chair person Wiley Report
-wed. april 23rd (the day after earth day!) there will be a tree dedication ceremony on the campus mall to re-plant the council oak.

Local foods week
-Chalk in your classrooms to get the word out about the week.
-There was a debate over whether or not we should have the banana dog as a vegetarian option. Banana dog supporters got the upper hand so we will be having fairtrade Ecuadorian banana dogs with local toppings such as sorghum syrup, honey, and peanut butter.
-Chili for the hotdog sale will be made after Ken Meter speaks on Wed. night ( around 9:00)  at Zac's house 1316 Jefferson Ct. Eau Claire, WI 54703. We're going to be relying on people's donations of the main ingredients for the chili, so please bring kidney beans, refried beans, celery, tomatoes, spices, onions, or any other tired produce that you think would work in a vegetarian chili.
-We are going to buy an animal with Heifer International with a portion of our earnings from the hot dog sale so start thinking about your favorite livestock.

-Alchemy Organica, Hay Market Grill, and The Goat are on board for earth day vendors.
-Check out the foodlums website for other fun things going on with earth day fun, including the hiking/ biking/ canoeing trail to the pheonix park celebration and a trash pickup.
-Compost and potting soil that we will be selling should be coming in before earth day so people power will be needed to shovel it all into bags.

Farmers market starts the first weekend in may. Hope everyone's craving asparagus!

Chair Person Wiley report
- A new oak tree is going to be planted symbolizing the tree of excellence

Garden
- Since we don't have access to the green house this year, the plan is to have individual members start plants in their places of residence providing they have enough light.
- Cold frames will be needed to get plants started in the garden. We can use our funds to invest in cold frame materials.
- We're starting to toss around ideas for what we all really want in the garden. Beans such as pintos and lentils were suggested, along with herbs.

The silent film mentioned at a previous meeting is starting to be made. The topic is students healthy eating in the area. Talk to the film maker Laura Sukowatey sukowalm@uwec.edu for more info.

-suggests selling worm composting (he has some experience w/ worm composting in his house)

Pumpkins
-pumpkins made trouble for the maintinence crews last summer so new plan-- have a pumpkin patch somewhere else. Dr. Kaldjian and Dr. Hupy both have possible patches.
-setting up a "cooking with pumpkins" w/ Meg Nord. Planned for the Nord/ Kaldjian residence on the evening of March 5th at 5. Come. It will be fun.
-"cooking with Meg" could become a monthly cooking demonstration that we have in a classroom, open to the public.

Activities Week
- Tom Kahlb can't speak anymore because he's moving to N. Dakota, but Ken Meider will
-Ken Meider (crossroads center ag. research)  speaking hopefully 4:30 -6 Wed. End the session with a brainstorming session in which he helps us assess our resources.
-talk to sodexho about getting a buffet in the Dulany in which every dish has at least one local ingredient.
- have events on the campus mall such as
free samples of local food donated by nice local  businesses or get a grant from ORSP so we can buy local food to give as samples
 lawn games like kubb
a food-instrument jam -- people make instruments out of carrots, gourds, potatoes and rockout to foodie music (posters could be made ahead of time to advertise this amazing food jam)  Check out    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpfYt7vRHuY   to be inspired.  We should all try to figure out techniques for making vegetable instruments. HOMEWORK FOR NEXT MEETING: try to make a vegetable instrument.

Seed Savers, a company out of North East Iowa that distributes heirloom seeds and plants, has events and programs every now and then. We could get a bus going to attend one of these events.

Heifer International
- Wendy is an intern which brought up the idea of Foodlums sponsoring an animal to be given to a community in need in another country.
-Animal comes with education on environmental sustainability, gender equality, and vetrinary and the intention for offspring and benefits of the animal to be shared and passed on to other members of the community.
-We could make it the goal of our next hot dog sale to get a goat... or some other animal that we all agree on.

Earthday
-In the process of contacting local restaurants, telling them that we are looking to incorperate local food and minimize waste.
Sammy's Pizza uses local meat and wisconsin cheese
Nine Degrees ice cream has their ice cream on bikes
-look into getting permit from the city so we could sell hot dogs or some other local food of our choice?
-hard boiled eggs for a snack. We could have them colored like earths! OR it could be a children's activity to color the hardboiled eggs like earths.

Try to make it to the sustainable dining committee. Seems to be in Alumni again. 5PM Tuesdays
