His work integrates market analysis, business development, systems thinking, and social concerns. As president of Crossroads Resource center, Meter holds 39 years experience in inner-city and rural community capacity building."

Earth Day Festivities
- Foodlums have a table for the Earth Day festivities that are actually going on Thursday of this week from 10:30 -2 on campus mall.
- Stop by the Foodlums table if you have time during those hours and help power the table with good foodie energy.

Bees
- Our buzzing friends were welcomed into their happy hive in the grassy knoll this week with a hearty homecoming parade mostly made up of Dr. Hupy's class.
- Ellen told the theatrical tale in which she slammed a box of bees on the ground and almost lost the queen under Dr. Hupy's instruction while learning to introduce the bees into the hive. As a bonus she had the privilege of being excused from her exam until later in the day to lead the bee introduction.
- As a conclusion to our Friday meeting those in attendance moseyed over to the bees' grassy knoll to welcome them in a more low-key fashion. Turns out that grassy knoll is a secret garden. Remnants of an ancient garden were discovered as curious Foodlums surveyed the area to ensure that the bees were in safe surroundings. A compost box, bricks, boards. Secret garden.
-Of course, upon considering the space further, it was decided that the grassy knoll would also be a fantastic location to erect a hoop house! Which could double as a model beehive for instructional use during the summer. It could be the Foodlums hive! Kinda like a club house for foodies.

Raised Beds
-Ellen and Dane cruised over to Menard's to pick up lumber for building raised beds. Dr. Hupy had suggested a plastic, hollow lumber to ensure a long life for lumber that didn't need to be treated. Because the plastic lumber was especially wide and not ideal for several other reasons, they decided to get cedar which came highly recommended by Ellen's drumming circle leader who also happens to work at Menard's. (His raised beds are made of cedar and have lasted 8 years with no problems)
- Considering the budget, raised beds will be 1- 1 1/2 ft. high.
- Straw needs to be collected to fill the bottom of the beds for straw-bale gardening.
- Grounds says that we can use their compost to fill our raised beds as well. Horray!
- Jenna has spare lumber back home that she can bring back for the corner support pieces of the raise beds.
- A lumber-cutting party took place on Jenna's screened porch on Saturday morning. Dr. Hupy's saw was used to cut all of our lumber down to size-- 8ft x 3ft 10in. for 8x4 raised beds. Cold but productive.

Foodlums Minutes 4/8/11

Our meeting this week was mostly a work day with informal discussion of upcoming events happening during the work time. Foodlums broke into teams. One team painted the bee hives and one team started some seeds in the cold frame in the garden.

Seeds Started
- Since some seeds have been started and are in the cold frame(peppers, buttercup squash, a few different kinds of tomatoes, and radishes) we will need to water them daily.
- You can help by watering the seeds!
- The hose key is now where to be found. Does anyone know where it is? For now we can fill a clean bucket in the bathroom (there is one in our stuff pile with a spade in it). Take care not to bring dirt into the building and bathroom. When we have some water in the bucket, we can use the spade to gently water the plants.
-If you water the seeds, check off the box for the day on the piece of paper in the cold frame so others won't water also.

Bee Hives
- The hives are now painted
- The piantings are BEAUTIFUL! There are pictures of bees and dogs and flowers that our bees are sure to love.
- It was mentioned that these bees better be hippy bees otherwise they might be unhappy with the decorations on their home.
- Frames and other hive materials are HERE! WHEW!
- Bees should be arriving within the next week. HORRAY!

Other Items That Were Mentioned in Our Informal Discussions

Ken Meter
- Will be speaking Monday April 18th at 12 noon in the Cabin!
- So EXCITING! He will be speaking on sustainable food systems. A perfect beginning to earth week.
- Check out his organization, Crossroads Resource Center, to get a better idea of what he's all about http://www.crcworks.org/?submit=about

Seeds
-Seeds will be ordered this week.
-When considering seeds this year, things we are considering include edible landscaping, foods that will be used and come into season when students are back, foods that we will use, and foods that can be stored for some time.
- The list generated at our meeting included: tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, buttercup squash, butternut squash, black beans (climbers), beets, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, kale, lettuce, parsley, cilantro, lavendar, lemon balm, mint, broccoli, cucumbers.
- If you have any other requests, let us know.

Seed Sorting
- A group of people in a conservation biology class, former Foodlums vice president David Hon included, were looking for people to help sort seeds on Sunday.
- They were helping the River Country RC&D with their bulk prairie seed sale by bagging and weighing out some seed this weekend.

Earth Day on Campus Mall
- The EEC (Envrionmental Endeavors Commission) has reserved campus mall on Thursday April 21st in honor of Earth Day
- Many environmentally minded organizations will be there.
- Foodlums will also be there! 10:30-2.
- We have yet to decide what food we will be handing out.

CSAs
- It can be hard to get a share with a CSA, but some still have spaces available.
- The link near the top of the foodlums website titled "Community Supported Agriculture" has links to several CSAs in the area.
- Founding Foodlums VP, Trevor Peterson, says that Slow Crow Farm near Menomonie still has shares available and can offer student-sized shares. They even have an egg share!
- Their website is http://www.slowcrowfarms.com/

Raised Beds
- Money has been requested for raised beds materials.
- If the money order goes through quickly, we can start work on raised beds at our next meeting! WHEE!!

Spring means time to work! Hooray!

Foodlums Minutes 4/1/11

"Lead me, Follow me, or Get the H out of my way"
- One of the two most important pearls of wisdom for farmers according to a fantastic old farmer of authentic food at the Sustainability in Agriculture Conference this weekend at Lawrence University

Ken Meter
- Can come speak on Monday, April 18th but needs to be back in the cities by 5:30
- We will have a brown bag lunch for his talk.
- The Cabin was suggested as a place that would be central and might attract extra people to hear him speak.
- Visit this link for a quick bio on Ken Meter and to learn more about his organization, Crossroads Resource Center http://www.crcworks.org/?submit=about

Raised Beds
- Dr. Hupy is hooking us up with the lumber for raised beds
- We need to build the raised beds-- there might be a work day for the next meeting. Check your mailboxes for further updates this week.
- Dane had a cool idea for a design for our raised beds involving an octogonally-shaped bed. We will need to meet with Daria, the University's Landscape professional, this week to get her input based on her knowledge of landscaping.

BEEEEEZZZZZZZZ
- Ellen and Chris spent their spring breaks building bee hives under the careful watch and mentorship of our masterful bee-keeping advisor Dr. Hupy.
- Now the hives have been primed and just need to be painted-- white (so the bees feel comfortable). If we insist on making them awesome looking with pretty designs and pictures, he says we can use light, pastel colors.
- Foodlums have been waiting for the money requested for bee hives from the Green fund but the money seems to be lost in the complex bureaucracy of our University System. Hopefully funds will be recieved... now... so we can express order bee-hive parts that our happy hive makers weren't able to construct.
- Painting of the hives will be a project for our next meeting. We need to get ready for the grand arrival of our Queen and her BEEZZZ the following week! YEAY!

Progressive Film Festival Food Films
- Two food-related films were shown on Saturday "Tapped" about bottled water, and "The End of the Line" about the decline of Newfoundland Fisheries. If you were able to attend either of these films, please come to the next meeting so you can tell everyone about them!
- "Bananas!" is being shows on Monday at 7:30 in Hibbard 102
- The description given in the PFF brochure is : "On behalf of twelve Nicaraguan banana workers, he is tackling Dole Food in a ground-breaking legal battle for their use of a banned pesticide that was known by the company to cause sterility"
- WHOA! Hope everyone can make that one!

Sustainability in Agriculture Conference
-Ellen and Briana went to a conference about sustainability in agriculture at Lawrence University this weekend
- They will be bubbling over to tell you all the cool things they learned and inspiration they got, so don't miss our next meeting.

UW- Milwaukee Food Conference
- UW- Milwaukee is hosting a food conference the weekend of April 15th
- The focus is more on food culture and cooking and looks AWESOME!
- PLEASE! Someone go!
- Drool over the savory menu of speakers and topics by clicking on the link below
http://www4.uwm.edu/cie/research/conferences/food/program.html

This video was shared at a meeting a few weeks back and now will be shared with everyone on the listserv as a little end-of-minutes treat. Surely our new beekeepers will attend the meeting in complete beekeeping apparel.

Cambodian food, pictures, and stories night
- At the last meeting we were so tantalized by Emilie's stories from Cambodia that we all demanded that she and Chris lead us all in an attempt to cook Cambodian food while telling stories from their trip to Cambodia over winter break.
- Friday, February 18th in Oak Ridge is the tentative plan for this super exciting upcoming social event
-More details to come

Hot Dog Sale
- Some people expressed interest in having another hot dog sale.
- We don't really need money for Foodlums, so the idea was proposed to hold a hot dog sale for another organization.
- Ideas for deserving organizations were community table among others.
- Thursday Feb. 17th was the date that seemed most appealing to foodlums at the meeting
- Briana is going to talk to Christian Wise about holding the sale in Davies

Weavers
- Seven Foodlums visited weavers last Saturday
- One visitor described weavers to be "like Sam's club that you don't feel guilty shopping at"
- The store featured local dairy products, eggs, and honey and a lot of bulk dry goods with some organic selections as well. But that's not all!
- Next store up for a group trip might be Hahn's Market... but no set plans yet

Lutefisk and Lefse
-Ellen invited foodlums to join her family in making lutefisk and lefse
- The invitation was met by a chorus of groans of disgust and squeals of excitement.
- Ellen will inform us when a specific date is set for this Norwegian culture bonanza!

Local Independence Showcase
- Local Independence-- a radio show on public radio Sunday evenings featuring local music-- is planning a showcase the weekend of February 26th.
- The hosts want foodlums to be there promoting local food and (hopefully, depending upon legalities) providing local food for local music fanatics.
- More plans will be made when we figure out what the theater's feelings are on food

I hope there are a few Foodlums out there who bought the green and gold buns that I saw at Ron's the other day. They are helpful just in case someone takes a picture of you eating your wisconsin brat during the game and wants to know from the picture which team you are cheering for.
-Briana

Foodlums Minutes 1/28/2011

Pre- Foodlums 3 o'clock discussion

Glitter and Cats room-
The meeting started with a discussion about the cats and glitter room
Briana entered with snow glimmering in her hair and our all-knowing president Tehya immediately jumped to the conclusion that she had come from the glitter room-- you know, the one located just around the corner in the secret hall of Phillips. The glitter room was revealed to also be filled with cats. So it is more properly known as the "Cats and Glitter Room".

Official Meeting Discussion

BOB (Blugold Organization Bash)
- This coming Wednesday 11-2 in Council Fire Room
- Please come for any amount of time you have available during this time frame so we can let others know about what an awesome group foodlums is!
-Tehya is picking up some cheese curds and bread to lure in cool people.

Beekeeping Workshop
- The Beekeeping workshop we received Green fund money to attend is Saturday February 5th and is put on by the Dunn County Beekeepers in Menomonie.
- Foodlums has sent in registration for three members to attend. The people at the meeting who were nominated to attend were Dane, Tehya, and Erin, however Chris has been reported to be extremely eager to attend as well, so there will be a pancake flipping competition this weekend among the four possible attendees to determine who our three primary beekeeping-knowledge-holders will be. If you are interested in competing in the flip-off for a spot in the workshop, please e-mail tehya (ricetm@uwec.edu)

Portable Shed
- Foodlums were also awarded money from the green fund for a shed to keep gardening supplies.
- It was decided that foodlums would look at menards selection
- Another idea was to find someone looking for experience in building to build the shed. An e-mail was sent to CVTC suggesting the project as an opportunity for a student in their wood technics program to gain more experience.

Cambodia Stories
-Emilie arrived and told everyone about her and Chris's experience in Cambodia over winter break.
-Stories included themes such as illegal banana plantations, a birthday cake baked in a jungle-made oven, a thrilling tractor ride, monks, and machetes.
- A night full of Cambodian food and pictures was demanded of Emilie. Stay tuned in for more details on this fantastic event. h

Fish Fry
- Chris and Zac are going to a fish fry next Friday, February 4th.
- Rides will be coordinated for those who are interested in attending.
- Fish fry does cost $9, but features three different kinds of fish! The farm belongs to the family of a CR member and they have been very involved nationwide with organic farming and have given lots of tours of their farms before, so it should be pretty sweet.
- We will meet at Towers circle to caravan out there at 2pm, Saturday, April 17 so they can give a tour 2:30- 4:30
- If you can drive, please come! It seems like a number of people had a conflict since the sweatshop workers will be speaking on campus at 4 so some may be heading back early while others can stay later if we have more than one car.

Bike race/ cook-off/ picnic/ kickball game/ space race
- Our founding vice-president, Trevor "Hot-Todders" Peterson, had an idea to have a cook-off (similar to our squash-off in the fall), but start it out with a bike-race around town to pick-up ingredients from different check-points. Sound a bit like a messenger-style race? well, there may be some inspiration there.
- So Trevor wasn't at the meeting, so we all just went wild building off of the idea and it's going to happen!
-Chris, Briana, and Katelyn are doing the detail planning of this event.
- The event will take off from the campus clock tower at 2pm on Sunday, April 18th (this coming Sunday) and will be a sort of space race... to the extent that there is a costume requirement that everyone wear something space related.
- We will be racing in two teams, which will be the cook-off teams. Each team is responsible for providing their own spices, flour, and sugar if needed. Other ingredients can be gathered during the race.
-Don't worry about this event interfering with your afternoon tea, because the rules mandate that we must all break for 4:00 tea at Infinitea.
-Recipes will be created during the race, so no preperation necessary there. Cooking houses are Danielle's and Chris's.
-The culmination of this spectacular event will be a picnic during which food will be shared and kickball will be played.
-Bring $3- $4 (to contribute for the food) and your bike and have a blast (-off?) this Sunday.
- If you have any questions, e-mail Briana (odegarbn@uwec.edu) or come to Friday's meeting)

Earth Day Volunteering
-Eau Claire Earth Day celebration will be April 24 11-6 at Owen Park.
- The organizers are looking for volunteers to help with the following items:
*set up (most needed!)
*take down
*sell t-shirts
*helping direct people/answer questions
*Help with children activities
*Bike Valet
- If you can help out with any of these rockin' things, contact our founding president, Dylan Thomas (patrick137@gmail.com) ASAP!!!

Garden
- Jeff started planting some peppers, collards, and tomatoes in the cold frame
- Some spinach was planted in the not-so-sunny plot
- Some paths were dug out and filled in with wood chips in the big, sunny plot.

Gear up for some farm touring and space racing next weekend!
-Briana

Foodlums Minutes 3/19/10 Meeting

Dane has the sign! I'll convey the plans below, just so we can remember how devoted we all were.

Earth Day
Drinks
- 6 kegs of Sprecher's rootbeer-- zac will get them in the morning
- Biodegradable cups not yet recieved in mail.... buying paper ones in case the biodegradable ones aren't in ben's mail box by the time we need them.
- water and ice recepticals need to be cleaned. we have 5 water barrels, 2 coolers for ice, and 2 tubs for ice and kegs. to clean dilute 1T bleach to 1 gallon of water and slosh it around until all surfaces have been disinfected. then rinse the recepticals out with water-- a few times.
-pricing for drinks is as follows: water cup - $.50
rootbeer (includes cup) - $1.00
rootbeer re-fill- $.50
water- FREE

Sat. morning schedule:
Group #1 meeting in garden at 9am to load dane's truck w/ compost, potting soil, and wagon.
Group #2 meeting in chancellor's lobby at 9am to disinfect and load ice into water barrels and coolers.

in retrospect:

Wendy was on TV with Judy Clark to promote the Earth Day festivities at 5 on friday :)

King Corn (the last progressive film fest film we were responsible for) was shown on friday night at 8. popcorn was served and corey and zac sacrificed themselves in order to pop popcorn during the film.

everything was loaded and ready to go. unfortunatly the earthday celebration was called off at the last minute due to cold and wind and snow, that, everyone decided they didn't love the earth enough to brave.

a foolums earth day potluck occured at davin's at 6 on saturday night with tasty food and fun.

4-18-08

Foodlums Minutes 4-18-08

Progressive Film Festival is this week in Hibbard 100.
We are hosting:
-Black Gold-- w/ free equal exchange coffee (mon. night at 8)
-Price of Sugar-- w/ honey from our honey bears (thur. night at 8)
-King Corn-- w/ free popcorn (fri. night at 8)

Speaking of honey, Zac is hosting baking lessons-- to bake french boule with honey!
-Wed. Kerri?

Garden Stuff
-the garden supply drive is still in the starting-up phase
-grow light option. we have 2 that have come out of the woodwork
-seductively more environmentally friendly alternative to grow lights-- making a cold frame/ hot box/ hot house with straw bales for walls for insulation and a sheet of clear plastic on top so we could just start a lot of the seeds in the garden
-contact Jarel if you'd be game for starting some seeds in your windows at home. just think of all the fun you can have with your sprouting seeds singing to them, reading them books, telling them about your day. he will assign you a seed. Ane suggests Seed Folks for story time with your seeds.
-collect your egg shells (pereferably broken into perfect halves) and egg cartons so we can use them to start seeds in and can just stick them in the ground with the eggshells and all. Dr. Hupy points out that this way, the eggshells will conveniently help to bring the pH of the soil closer to 7! BINGO
-another plan for seed-starting containers is teh coir-based pot which is made of coconut hair (more sustainable than the peat-based pot). Jane will buy a butt load of them using the weathered $5 bill that was found in the garden supply pile a few weeks ago.
-set aside Sun. April 20th... for a GARDEN HOLIDAY. we will be doing work in the garden and most importantly, building hot boxes/ hot houses/ cold frames (whatever you like to call them)

It's time for a much-needed foodlums Hoobob. the hoobob will occur on the weekend of the earthday celebration on saturday evening. location has yet to be determined.

Fry bread sale for NASA (native american student association) on thur. 11-2 in front of the council fire room. delicious!

4-4-08

Foodlums Minutes 4-4-08

AWESOME LOCAL FOODS WEEK!

We started out the meeting with reflections on our money situation:
- the hot dog sale raised $367.30 - $115 that bought the hot dogs and buns.
- we still owe Dane $110 from the last sale and Zac $120 from various food that he bought.
- the econ. department is going to give us $50 (WHOA! nice!)
- we have $200 pending from student senate
- compost will cost $425 (but we'll get it back plus more after we sell it)
- we want to have at least $120 so that we can have hot dog sales in the future
- a certain amount of money will be necessary for buying drinks that we will be selling at earth day
- we still need to buy an animal from Heifer International (probably around half of what we earned at the hot dog sale after expenses-- about $126.)
- garden supplies need replenishing, which might cost us around $80
- materials to start cold frames... around $100
- there are $540 in our account right now (excluding any money mentioned above)
-- It is suggested that we wait until we have paid for the compost, raised some money from compost sales, and gotten on our feet again (a few more weeks) until we buy the animal or animals for Heifer International.

Jen suggested starting a garden supply drive for community gardens in the area that we could benefit from as well, so she's the head of that committee. Hopefully we'll get a lot of donations from the community and then we won't have to spend as much on garden supplies.

Garden stuff.
- we need lights for starting seeds, old yogurt cartons, cold frame material,

Earth Day
- Judy Clark from TV 13 wants to do an interview April 25 @5. Ane and Wendy are on it.
- our next plan is to sell refreshments at the foodlums table.
